WILLIAMS FACES IVANOVIC

Venus Williams might have to take on the Serbian superstar Ana Ivanovic in the semi final round of ASB Classic tennis tournament which is currently going on in Auckland. Both the players made it to the quarter final round by winning their respective second round fixtures yesterday.

Ivanovic cruised to an easy victory against Johanna Larsson of Sweden, while, Venus had to work hard to get better of her Austrian opponent Yvonne Meusburger. The American superstar lost the opening set and was under a lot of pressure going into the second set. But, she raised her game quite significantly from that stage and ended up playing some great tennis in the last two sets.

The match between Venus and Meusburger got affected by rain in its earlier stages. In the first set, when the scores were levelled at 1-1, it started pouring down and the two players had to go off the court. However, the rain didn’t continue for too long and in about 15 minutes time, the action resumed. That rain break seemed to have disturbed Venus’ rhythm as she looked completely out of sorts after coming back. Her serve got broken a couple of times and eventually, her opponent took the set away from her.

To Venus’ credit, she didn’t get demoralized after losing that opening set. She just put that set out of her system and came out thinking positively. She was quite aggressive in the next two sets and won both of them to emerge out as winner.

Talking to the reporters in the post match interview, Venus said, “At the start, she was hitting the ball fantastically well and was posing a few problems for me. I am glad that I came back well.”

It took Venus 113 minutes to beat Meusburger.
