Martina Hingis reckons Sania Mirza can prove to be a very good partner for her in the doubles category, but, she has stayed short of committing to the long term relationship with the Indian beauty queen.
According to Hingis, for a doubles pair to be successful, it’s important that the two of them play differently and do not have the same strengths and weaknesses and that is exactly the case with her and Sania.
Yesterday, the Press Trust of India quoted Hingis as saying, “I think we will have a very good tuning on the court. Our strengths and weaknesses lie in different areas. She thrives on her forehands, while, I do the same on my backhands. But, it’s hard to say at the moment how long we will be together.”
“Unless, we play a few tournaments and see how it goes, we can’t be committing for long. I look forward though. It’s a great opportunity. She is a fantastic player and having her by my side will be exciting.”
Sania and Hingis will be featuring in the Indian Wells tournament which is coming up shortly.
Sania is not the first and only Indian player whom Hingis has paired with in her career.
The 34-year old Swiss legend has had partnership with Leander Paes as well. In fact, the duo clinched this year’s Australian Open mixed doubles title together a couple of months back.
Hingis would hope her partnership with Sania also fetches similar results.
When asked about Paes, Hingis said, “I feel really comfortable while being out there with Leander. He is a superb partner to have for any female player. He does the extra yards, covers more space and makes it quite easy for you. He almost protects you when you are not playing as well as you like.”
